Examination

An applicant for initial licensure must pass the National Physical Therapy Exam ("NPTE"). No person may be licensed under the Physical Therapy Practice Act if the person has failed the examination six or more times, whether or not the exam was taken in South Carolina.

Requirements & Exam Registration

Register with the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) to take the NPTE upon submitting your application to the Board. Payment must be paid online at the time your application is submitted to SCBPTE. Register and pay the exam fee at https://www.fsbpt.org/. Applicants who are not registered to take the NPTE cannot be approved by the Board to sit for the exam.

Additional Information

If an applicant fails the NPTE, he or she may take the exam a second (2nd) time by submitting the application found online to Repeat NPTE. Note: Exam fee must be paid online. If the NPTE is failed a fifth (5th ) time, applicants must take courses approved by the Board, furnish evidence of completion of the required coursework, and appear before the Board to request permission to take the exam a sixth (6th) and final time.
