  • 2018 Animal Shelter Report NEW!

  • New Bill: S918 passed the General Assembly on May 9th, and was signed by the Governor on May 15th. The law establishes limitations on initial opioid prescriptions for acute pain management or postoperative pain management and designates exceptions to those limitations. This section of the bill is in effect now.

  • In accordance with South Carolina Code of Laws Section 40-69-300(G), animal shelters¹,   providing veterinary services²   in South Carolina must register with the South Carolina Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.   Please see the definitions on the registration form to determine if your animal shelter is required to register.

  • In accordance with South Carolina Code of Laws Section 40-69-300(G)¹,   emergency veterinary clinics providing veterinary services²   in South Carolina must register with the South Carolina Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.   Please see the definitions on the registration form to determine if your emergency veterinary clinic is required to register.

  • Veterinary-Client Patient Relationship (VCPR) - Chapter 120 Section C(1) – C(6) Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, Board of Veterinary Medicine.

    C. "Veterinarian-client-patient relationship" means:

    1. The veterinarian has recently seen and is personally acquainted with the keeping and care of the animal through an examination of or visit to the premises where the animal is kept.
    2. The veterinarian has assumed the responsibility for making clinical judgments regarding the health of the animal and the need for medical treatment.
    3. The veterinarian has sufficient knowledge of the animal to initiate a general or preliminary diagnosis of the medical condition of the animal.
    4. The veterinarian is available or has arranged for emergency coverage for follow-up and evaluation.
    5. The client has agreed to follow the veterinarian’s instructions.
    6. The veterinarian-client-patient relationship lapses when the licensee has not seen the animal within one year.
  • Facility Inspection and Inspection Form Information: Facility inspections are done using the Board’s inspection form. Each item that is part of the inspection is related to statute or regulation requirements. Inspections are either adequate (A) or show a violation (V). Any deficiencies or violations are given a timeframe in which to make corrections.

  • Rabies Information
    The Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners often gets inquires about rabies, schedule of vaccinations, and interstate travel. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has some valuable information on rabies; and the CDC site has many answers to various questions regarding rabies.  The link to their site is provided below.

  • Board News for Fees 2014
    The South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation promulgated new regulations during the 2014 legislative session affecting professional and occupational renewal licensing fees and applications fees. The fees for the South Carolina Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners have been adjusted as published herein and will be effective during the renewal cycle beginning March 31, 2015 and for initial applications beginning July 1, 2014. The new fee schedule may be found under “Licensure Information: Fees”.
