Board of Landscape Architectural Examiners

Continuing Education

The SC Board of Landscape Architectural Examiners requires that all individuals must complete 20 hours of continuing education activities for each renewal period.

Important Notices

  • The Board does not pre-approve continuing education activities or courses.

  • It is the responsibility of the licensee to maintain documentation of continuing education activities for a period of 4 years.

  • Do not send continuing education documentation to the Board unless you are selected for a random audit.

  • Failure to comply with a continuing education audit will be considered a violation of the Landscape Architectural Law and will be subject to disciplinary action.


  • 15 hours minimum in health/safety/welfare topics;   5 hours allowed for practice related topics.

  • 12 hours minimum in structured educational activities;   8 hours allowed for self-directed study.

Carryover Hours Allowed

  • 10 hour maximum.

  • Hours cannot be applied toward the requirements for the prior renewal period.

  • Hours used to clear a continuing education deficiency for the prior renewal period cannot be reapplied toward the current renewal period.

Renewal Date

January 31st of odd years

Reporting Method

Individuals will certify that they have the hours on the individual license renewal. Documentation should not be submitted to the Board unless the individual is selected for a random audit. If selected, the licensee will be contacted by U.S. Mail with a CE Reporting Form, instructions on submitting documentation to the Board, and a deadline date to respond to the audit request. The Board will confirm receipt of the materials by email. The Board has final authority with respect to approval of courses, and will notify the licensee of the audit results by U.S. Mail.

Approved Methods

Structured Activities:   The Board accepts an unlimited number of structured activities that cover health/safety/welfare topics such as technical presentations, workshops, or seminars on landscape architectural subjects provided by independent sponsors or held in conjunction with colleges, universities, conventions, or seminars. Examples of these types of activities include events or courses by:

Self Directed Activities:   The Board allows a maximum of 8 hours of self directed activities. Examples of self directed activities include:

  • Public service that draws on landscape architectural expertise, such as design review boards, planning commissions, building code advisory boards, urban renewal boards, or code study committees.

  • Authoring papers, articles, or books.

  • Individualized seminars, tutorials, video courses, or webinars that are pre-recorded and do not allow interaction with an instructor.

  • Double credit is issued for teaching landscape architectural courses or seminars. Credit can only be claimed once, and does not apply to full time faculty.

Practice Related Topics:   The Board allows a maximum of 5 hours of practice related topics. Examples of practice related topics include business courses, product demonstrations, or instructional courses that demonstrate utilizing technology into practice.

Acceptable Documentation

Documentation submitted to the Board in response to a continuing education audit must include the course title, date, number of hours, instructor, and a brief description of the course content. Acceptable examples of appropriate documentation are:

  • Certificates of Completion

  • Agendas

  • Sign in sheets (that provide the required details)

  • Meeting minutes (to confirm public service activities)

  • A copy of articles or papers published. For books, a synopsis and a link to a retailer should be provided.

Disallowed Activities

The Board has final authority with respect to approval of courses, credit, continuing education hour value of courses, and other value of content. If a course is disallowed, the licensee will have 180 calendar days after the date of notification to substantiate the original claim or to earn other continuing education credit to fulfill the minimum requirement. Courses taken to fulfill a deficiency will toward the previous renewal period and cannot be resubmitted for the current license renewal period.


  • A new licensee is exempt for their first reporting period (not to exceed 2 years).

  • A licensee serving on temporary active duty in the armed forces of the United States for a period of time exceeding 120 days in a year. Documentation to substantiate this exemption must be submitted to the Board by January 1 of odd numbered years.

  • A licensee experiencing physical disability, illness, or other extenuating circumstances as reviewed and approved by the Board. Documentation to substantiate this exemption must be submitted to the Board by January 1 of odd numbered years.

  • Licensees approved for Emeritus Status.
