South Carolina Board of Cosmetology

Important Notices:

Renewal Time Is Here!

Current South Carolina cosmetology licenses will expire at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2019. Reminders were mailed in January as a courtesy. If the licenses are not renewed as of March 11, 2019, the licenses are considered expired, and the reinstatement process must be completed in order for you to continue to provide cosmetology and other related services. It is unlawful to practice without a current license.

To avoid a delay in licensure/salon services, you must have 12 hours of continuing education on file with the Board’s office that was obtained during the licensure period March 11, 2017 - March 10, 2019. You may renew online as long as you have a valid e-mail address on file with the Board’s office. If you do not remember your User ID and password, you may go to and click on “I Forgot/ Do Not know my User ID and/or I Forgot My Password.”

Please ensure that you read and review your answers carefully! If you are unsure of a question, call the Board’s office or send an e-mail to the Board requesting clarity. You can edit your answers through the online module prior to making a payment. Once the payment is received your answers are official and more documentation and/or fees may apply.

Paper Application – The paper application is available on the Board’s website on the Applications and Forms page. You do not need a user ID or password to print it.

Name Changes – If you have a change of name, please submit a paper renewal application along with a copy of your legal documentation (marriage license, divorce decree) to either of the addresses listed on the renewal application.

New Licensees – If this is your first time renewing, you are not required to complete continuing education for the first renewal.

Inactive Status – If you do not wish to maintain active licensure, you may place your license in inactive status via the online renewal process or you may submit a paper renewal application and select the inactive status box. You do not have to be current on your CE requirements in order to request inactive status; however, you will not receive a license and cannot practice or render cosmetology/ cosmetology-related services while the license is inactive. You are required to pay the renewal fee in order to maintain inactive status. In order to return to active licensure, you will be required to gain CE classes for each renewal period while on inactive status if you decide to reactivate your license at a later date.

Continuing Education – If you are required to gain CE, your hours (two classes = 12 hours) must be reflected online prior to you accessing the online renewal. If your hours are not listed, your renewal will be stopped because you do not meet the CE requirements. Licensees may check their CEU hours online prior to beginning the renewal, by selecting “Check Your CEU Hours Online” on the Board of Cosmetology education page.

Only half of the 12-hour CE requirement may be completed online. Cosmetologists are the only licensees who may complete any CE class with the exception of instructor classes for CE credit.

Instructors – Licensed instructors must have evidence of twelve (12) contact hours of instruction geared toward teaching on file prior to renewing. Only half of the 12-hour requirement may be completed online. If you complete 6 hours online, you must complete 6 hours in-person with the same CE provider in order to gain full credit.

Please e-mail the Board’s office at BoardInfo@LLR.SC.GOV if you need additional information or if you have questions.
