In an effort to assist military spouses who are locating to South Carolina, the General Assembly enacted legislation to allow for an expedited licensure process for those military spouses who hold an active license that is in good standing in their home state. There are two available options for military spouse licensure: temporary and permanent. A temporary license is available for one year and is nonrenewable. Upon expiration, the licensee would have to apply for permanent licensure in order to continue practicing in South Carolina. Application fees are waived for temporary licensure. A permanent license is available for one or two years, depending on the license type, and is renewable.
To apply for a one-year temporary license, you must submit a completed “Military Spouse Expedited Licensure Request Form”, an application for the specific license type you wish to receive and a copy of your spouse’s orders indicating duty assignment dates. While application fees are waived for a temporary license, you may be assessed fees by another state to obtain verification of licensure. You also may be charged a fee to obtain the required criminal background check.
If you would like to apply for a permanent license, you must submit a completed “Military Spouse Expedited Licensure Request Form”, an application for the specific license type you wish to receive along with the accompanying application fee, and a copy of your spouse’s orders indicating duty assignment dates.
